How I took it: Photos of 2nd City Church Sanctuary
I guess you can say that I've had the photographer's winter blues. I haven't really done anything creative with my new Fuji camera in several weeks, and I was waiting for my chance. Well the chance came. My daughter had piano lessons with my friend Matt and he let me wander around the church and capture some photos in the empty sanctuary.
I noticed right away that the light was just perfect for what I was looking for. I wanted a sense of strong directional light with deep shadows and pops of color. I knew that I would be using the architecture of the place as my framework. I focused mainly on the windows and the arcs of the pews, which were inspired by another photographer's work that I had seen recently.
The settings were mostly shot with a wide open aperture (1.4-2.8) and varied shutter and ISO settings depending on how I exposed. For this kind of lighting though, underexposure is best. I found most shots favored exposure compensations of -2 or even -3. Everything was shot hand-held, trying different angles and moving all over the sanctuary.
